School
School attendance is compulsory in British Columbia for children between the ages of 5 and 16. You can select from public schools, independent schools or home schooling.
Public School
Public school is free in British Columbia, and every child living here is eligible to attend.
The Surrey School District is the largest district in British Columbia and one of the few growing districts in the province. There are over 124 schools serving more than 67,200 students located in Surrey and White Rock and offer a wide range of education and support programs to students of all ages. http://www.sd36.bc.ca
You will need to bring the following documents to register your child:
- Immigration or citizenship documents for parents and each child.
- Birth certificate, family register or equivalent document, showing date of birth for each child and names of parents.
- Proof of residence for the school year such as a rental agreement, purchase agreement or recent property tax statement.
- Immunization records.
- Report cards.
Independent Schools
Parents may choose to send children to independent schools that offer a specific religious, language, educational or philosophical approach. For more information on independent schools, visit this Ministry of Education webpage.
Home Schooling
Some families prefer to home-school their children. This means that they teach their children at home instead of in a school. If you home-school your child, you must still register them with the Ministry of Education and follow an educational program.
Aboriginal Education Enhancements
The Ministry of Education is responsible for Aboriginal Education in the BC public school system from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
